Alien can lay claim to one of the best casts ever assembled to take on a film franchise. All the actors are top class and it's really not possible to go wrong with any of their characters. The standout turn has to go to Sigourney Weaver as she adds a really convincing emotional edge to the character of Ripley. Backed up by excellent voice acting from the likes of David, and particularly Sigourney, Weaver gets the most out of the character, and she's scary to watch at times in the scene when she dissolves into a personality-less alien. But it's Paul Reiser, who plays the sleazy corporation boss of the new world, and Terry McQuade who's really steals the show. Their performances are so imprinted on the memory that you can't go anywhere without thinking of them and their characters. Michael Biehn's Burke is also nice to have around. He seems to be more of a monk-like figure, which is really effective, living a quiet life away from the rest of the group. However, his breakdown is the most emotional scene of the film, and the one that really clinches it. Lance Henriksen's Burke is the comic relief and is, despite being the best character in the film, often the least likeable. He also adds a bit of levity, he's one of the few characters that is, in a way, innocent. His character is a great one, however, and his moment is very poignant.
All in all, this was a great film that's still one of my favorites. Michael Biehn kicks it up a few notches by directing the new scenes. The script, written by Dan O'Bannon and Don Jakoby, is masterful. You never know how this is going to turn out until it does, and something about this particular drama just hits you. The action is phenomenal. The acting is superb, and the scenes where the characters fight to survive are especially hair-raising. It's not often you see such a well thought-out screenplay translate so well to the screen, but this one does. Even in the scenes when the aliens aren't really on screen, they're still there. You can feel the tension start to build and all that you want to see is a monster popping out to rip you a new one. The visual effects are well done, but they aren't as ever present as they could be. d2c66b5586
