For one thing, there are excellent JavaScript libraries such as jQuery that will take care of many of these details for you. With jQuery, that complicated XMLHttpRequest code can be replaced with a simpler $.ajax() call, or depending on what you're doing, an even simpler $.get(), $.post(), or $.getJSON() call.
For isolation I overwrite $.ajax to write the parameter array of an AJAX call to a variable. This works to test how methods use AJAX functions, but I have difficulty testing the success handler of $.load()
Instead of raising the event from any real $.ajax code or by triggering any events, I have my fake ajax object call the function (which is passed in as a parameter to $.ajax()) as part of my fake function.
In the above example, define a function ajax_response() that accepts some JSON string as an argument (or any number of custom arguments useful for simulating a response) and returns an anonymous closure function that will be assigned to $.ajax as an override for unit testing.
The anonymous function accepts a params argument which will contain the settings object passed to the $.ajax function. And it uses the argument(s) passed to the outer function to simulate a response from the server. In this example, it always simulates a successful response from the server, by simply invoking the success callback and supplying it with the dummy JSON.
Approach 2: In this approach, we will use jQuery to make an ajax call. The ajax() method is used in jQuery to make ajax calls. It is used as a replacement for all approaches which are not working to make ajax calls.
The $.ajax() function underlies all Ajax requests sent by jQuery. It is often unnecessary to directly call this function, as several higher-level alternatives like $.get() and .load() are available and are easier to use. If less common options are required, though, $.ajax() can be used more flexibly.
The jQuery XMLHttpRequest (jqXHR) object returned by $.ajax() as of jQuery 1.5 is a superset of the browser's native XMLHttpRequest object. For example, it contains responseText and responseXML properties, as well as a getResponseHeader() method. When the transport mechanism is something other than XMLHttpRequest (for example, a script tag for a JSONP request) the jqXHR object simulates native XHR functionality where possible.
The jqXHR objects returned by $.ajax() as of jQuery 1.5 implement the Promise interface, giving them all the properties, methods, and behavior of a Promise (see Deferred object for more information). These methods take one or more function arguments that are called when the $.ajax() request terminates. This allows you to assign multiple callbacks on a single request, and even to assign callbacks after the request may have completed. (If the request is already complete, the callback is fired immediately.) Available Promise methods of the jqXHR object include:
As of jQuery 1.5, the fail and done, and, as of jQuery 1.6, always callback hooks are first-in, first-out managed queues, allowing for more than one callback for each hook. See Deferred object methods, which are implemented internally for these $.ajax() callback hooks.
Different types of response to $.ajax() call are subjected to different kinds of pre-processing before being passed to the success handler. The type of pre-processing depends by default upon the Content-Type of the response, but can be set explicitly using the dataType option. If the dataType option is provided, the Content-Type header of the response will be disregarded.
If jsonp is specified, $.ajax() will automatically append a query string parameter of (by default) callback= to the URL. The jsonp and jsonpCallback properties of the settings passed to $.ajax() can be used to specify, respectively, the name of the query string parameter and the name of the JSONP callback function. The server should return valid JavaScript that passes the JSON response into the callback function. $.ajax() will execute the returned JavaScript, calling the JSONP callback function, before passing the JSON object contained in the response to the $.ajax() success handler.
The global option prevents handlers registered using .ajaxSend(), .ajaxError(), and similar methods from firing when this request would trigger them. This can be useful to, for example, suppress a loading indicator that was implemented with .ajaxSend() if the requests are frequent and brief. With cross-domain script and JSONP requests, the global option is automatically set to false. See the descriptions of these methods below for more details.
Ajax requests are time-limited, so errors can be caught and handled to provide a better user experience. Request timeouts are usually either left at their default or set as a global default using $.ajaxSetup() rather than being overridden for specific requests with the timeout option.
The first letter in Ajax stands for \"asynchronous,\" meaning that the operation occurs in parallel and the order of completion is not guaranteed. The async option to $.ajax() defaults to true, indicating that code execution can continue after the request is made. Setting this option to false (and thus making the call no longer asynchronous) is strongly discouraged, as it can cause the browser to become unresponsive.
The $.ajax() function returns the XMLHttpRequest object that it creates. Normally jQuery handles the creation of this object internally, but a custom function for manufacturing one can be specified using the xhr option. The returned object can generally be discarded, but does provide a lower-level interface for observing and manipulating the request. In particular, calling .abort() on the object will halt the request before it completes.
$.ajax() converters support mapping data types to other data types. If, however, you want to map a custom data type to a known type (e.g json), you must add a correspondence between the response Content-Type and the actual data type using the contents option:

The Microsoft Ajax Content Delivery Network (CDN) hosts popular third party JavaScript libraries such as jQuery and enables you to easily add them to your Web applications. For example, you can start using jQuery which is hosted on this CDN simply by adding a tag to your page that points to ajax.aspnetcdn.com.
The CDN used to use the microsoft.com domain name and has been changed to use the aspnetcdn.com domain name. This change was made to increase performance because when a browser referenced the microsoft.com domain it would send any cookies from that domain across the wire with each request. By renaming to a domain name other than microsoft.com performance can be increased by as much to 25%. Note ajax.microsoft.com will continue to function but ajax.aspnetcdn.com is recommended.
As an example, I made a super simple and silly function called t4a_ajax_call().The only thing it does is dump the $_POST values, just to have some sorts of output, and to get an idea what kind of data is being relayed.

Every AJAX request goes through the admin-ajax.php file in the wp-admin folder. That this file is named admin-ajax might be a bit confusing. I quite agree, but this is just how the development process turned out. So, we should use admin-ajax.php for back-end and user-facing AJAX.
Each request needs to supply at least one piece of data (using the GET or POST method) called action. Based on this action, the code in admin-ajax.php creates two hooks, wp_ajax_my_action and wp_ajax_nopriv_my_action, where my_action is the value of the GET or POST variable action.
This is how Ajax requests are structured: the contents of $.ajax() is essentially an object taking values it will use to construct the request. The above example is about as simple as it gets for making a barebones GET call. We're looping through each tag and passing its contents (the URL) to the API, and receiving an object in response.
I know this post is old but I have a question on the use of the javascript Data function. Is it possible to pass a variable to it. It seems that this is not possible and causes issues with events not firing. What am I missing
The ajaxStart() event is a global event that occurs when an Ajax request begins, assuming no other Ajax requests are presently active. The ajaxStart() event can also be used to cancel a previously called Ajax callback or to start a new one.
For example, suppose you have an online shopping cart application that allows customers to add items to their shopping cart when they are ready to checkout. An ajaxStart() event could be used to trigger a shopping cart initialization routine when the user first visits the application, or any time a new shopping cart is about to be initialized.
This is very useful for error handling. If a request fails but the result is not needed immediately, it is transferred to a cache, and then called later. This is especially useful if you want to keep track of failed requests and retry those that were not successful. A typical scenario is the case of an AJAX request but no data is returned, or the data is returned but not as intended. In this case, you can call ajaxComplete() to get a new set of data and continue with your business logic. A successful AJAX request is not necessarily a reason to call ajaxComplete(). you can still do other stuff while the data is being transferred from the server to the browser.
